[Essay] Social Media Star

In this era of globalization communication can be done quickly. We did not have to wait for a long time if we want to communicate with people from far place. We can easily communicate with them with the help of internet. One of the results of the internet is social media. According to Wikipedia social media are computer-mediated tools that allow people or companies to create, share, or exchange information, career interests, ideas, and pictures / videos in virtual communities and networks. Through social media we can share our daily activities with people through writing, pictures and even video.

Some people use social media to become famous. Such people are known as social media star or internet celebrity. According to Wikipedia, the Internet celebrity is someone who has become famous by means of the internet. In Indonesia we have terms like selebtweet, selebgram, etc. The term is dependent on which social media that makes them famous. The term celebrity has shifted no longer just for actors, singers, etc. but the famous social media can also become a celebrity. Anyone can become a social media star from teenagers, adults and even pets.

Social media star became one of the very influential people today. In fact there is some prestigious award that has a separate category for social media star. An example is the Favorite Social Media Star by People’s Choice Awards. Because social media star very influential, brands began to look at them to market their products. Even people prefer to buy products advertised by social media Compared to the star that is advertised by a celebrity or advertised on TV. According to the Marketplace, a recent study from marketing firm Collective Bias found nearly a third of consumers surveyed are more likely to purchase a product by a non-celebrity blogger than a celebrity.

There are some people who argue that being a social media star is instant thing. The fame did not last long. They fame came fast but also disappear fast . We can see an example like Sinta and Jojo who was famous because their were lip-sync to dangdut song “Keong Racun” that they uploaded on Youtube and Norman Kamaru who become famous because the video of him lip-sync to Indian song . But of course it does not apply to everyone. There are people who are more fortunate who are able to maintain their fame. The examples are Justin bieber and a youtuber PewDiePie. PewDiePie was named by Time magazine as the most influential people on the Internet on 2015. He got $ 12 million over the past year and crowned as the world’s top-earning Youtube Stars in 2015 by Forbes.

The fame of social media star only instant is because of many things. One of them is probably due to the rapid change trend. In terms of its own social media trend is also changing rapidly. People move from one social media to other social media to follow the social media which is becoming a trend at that time. The reason people become a social media star was also influenced by the nature of narcissism or self-centered that hit this generation.

On the internet there are many tips to be well known in social media. Why do people get famous on social media? The first reason is that people have things that we do not have. The things that they have probably only could we dream. The second reason is because they are relatable. There are some people who post things that may seem relatable for people who follow them. The other thing is that they are like friends. Unlike celebrities who rarely post their activities social media stars actively post their daily activities so people felt close to them. Therefore, now a lot of celebrity, especially young celebrity are using social media to get new fans and retain their old fans.

There are some disadvantages of being famous in social media. The first disadvantage is you lose your privacy. You can no longer post something randomly because there will always be people who pay attention and be ready to judge you. Another disadvantage is sometimes we need to fake our life. Sometimes the social media stars need to fake Reviews their life and pretend to be someone who is not a true personality. In 2015 an Australian Instagram star, O’Neill Essena Announced that she is quitting social media for good. She had more than half a million followers on Instagram, 200,000 on YouTube and Tumblr, and 60,000 on Snapchat. She claiming social media is fake and not real life. Also she said she even faking a relationship to Become more famous.

Social media as a result of the development of the Internet has created many famous people commonly called social media star. Currently social media stars is very influential even famous brand also began to use them as a place to market their products. Become a social media star has advantages and disadvantages. The important thing is to remain who we are and do not become too addicted to it.
